Currently the reliability studies are growing rapidly in engineering and industrial fields. The statistical theory and mathematical modelling of reliability are very important but even then one could suggest that these have not been sufficiently investigated in comparison with other aspects of reliability.

Many researchers have shown interests in reliability applications dealing with maintenance and replacement policies, risk analysis, warranty/guarantee or actuarial science.

This thesis, hopefully, makes some significant contributions to reliability theory in particular, and to statistical theory in general.

In this research a general background is introduced to cover the basic techniques used in the analysis of different topics and some properties appearing in the thesis.

We have considered the problem of testing of exponentiality versus some positive or negative ageing properties. In the process of doing this, various test statistics for this problem are established. We investigate the problem under general random censorship model; complete sample and other forms of censoring are special cases of this.

In the current literature, researchers have used the concept of renewal theory to introduce some interesting and useful renewal ageing properties. We focus our testing problem on the main renewal classes of life distributions.

The theme of the thesis is to study the distributions of test statistics, estimate the corresponding parameters and construct tables with small sample sizes that could be useful to engineers and reliability analysts.

The implications of, and the links between, the renewal classes and the other existing classes are explained. Some properties of these classes, such as the closure properties under some reliability operations, are also investigated.

Simulated percentiles are calculated, and power estimates are established for each class of distributions corresponding to some commonly used properties used in reliability theory . The estimated risks and tests of normality are produced for various statistics.

All the computations are made with computer programs written with a FORTRAN programming language.  The thesis concludes with some comments and suggestions for further research studies.
